K.H. As'ad bin Humam, or Eyang As'ad, was born in 1933 in Kotagede, Yogyakarta. As the son of H. Humam Siraj, Eyang As'ad showed a strong passion for learning, even though he had to leave formal education at a young age due to early spinal bone deterioration. Despite his physical limitations, this did not stop him from continuing to seek knowledge and share it with others. In his young age, he assisted his father in selling imitation gold jewelry 'Padi Mas' at the Beringharjo Market in Yogyakarta, as well as passionately teaching the children in his village to read the Qur'an.
IQRO' was born out of Eyang As'ad's experience in teaching how to read the Qur'an and his concern about the Muslim children in Indonesia who still could not read the Qur'an. At that time (in the 1980s), the illiteracy rate of the Qur'an was around 90%. This sparked his determination to eliminate Qur'anic illiteracy, along with his dakwah movement, Team Tadarus "AMM" Yogyakarta (Angkatan Muda Masjid-Mushola), by creating a book on a fast method for learning to read the Qur'an, the IQRO' method.
The IQRO' method was designed to accelerate and simplify the process of learning to read the Qur'an. The IQRO' book has become the main guide for the younger generation in understanding the Arabic letters and pronouncing the Qur'anic recitations. Published in the 1980s, this method offers an innovative approach that emphasizes the active role of the students. The IQRO' method provides a more independent and interactive learning experience.
Eyang As'ad's vision was to eliminate Qur'anic illiteracy through his work, the IQRO' method, which is easier to access and understand by people from all walks of life. He always encouraged inclusivity and openness in spreading the IQRO' method. This spirit of togetherness and inclusivity made the IQRO' method widely accepted and used by various Muslim groups, both in Indonesia and abroad.
K.H. As'ad Humam passed away on February 2, 1996, during the month of Ramadan, leaving behind an everlasting legacy: the IQRO' method, which is still widely used in Qur'anic education by various religious educational institutions both in Indonesia and abroad. His efforts in the movement to eliminate Qur'anic illiteracy continue through his work, the IQRO' method, which is further developed by the Yayasan Team Tadarus "AMM" Yogyakarta (National LPTQ Research and Development Center).
